Olga Perez Stable Cox: A Divided Nation

Following the election in November, a Psychology professor at Orange Coast College – Olga Perez Stable Cox – expressed her dismay at the results. Some of her words were surreptitiously videotaped by a student. You can watch the entire video here, but some of the more forceful remarks she made are the following:

” . . . [referring to Trump] white supremacist and a vice president that is one of the most anti-gay humans in this country. And so we are in for a difficult time but again I do believe that we can get past that. Our nation is divided, we have been assaulted, it’s an act of terrorism. One of the most frightening things for me and most people in my life is that the people creating the assault are among us. It is not some stranger from some other country coming and attacking our sense of what it means to be an American and the things that we stand for and that makes it more painful because I’m sure that all of us have people in our families and our circle of friends that are part of that movement and it is very difficult … we are way beyond Republicans and Democrats and we’re really being back to being at civil war — I don’t mean that in a fighting way but our nation is divided as clearly as it was in Civil War times.”

Her remarks have been described as a “political speech (Washington Post),” as a “rant (CBS News in San Francisco, Fox news),” as “hate speech” and as “bullying tactics (Shawn Steel, the attorney for the campus Republicans who are calling for her termination).” As a University faculty member, I am opposed to political speech in the classroom precisely because it is a matter of opinion over which reasonable (and unreasonable) people are entitled to disagree. I am also opposed to hate speech and bullying, especially when it is intended to silence a person’s freedom of expression. But that’s not the case here, is it. Consider what happened next: Professor Cox has been the victim of death threats and has been forced to flee the country fearing for her safety. Let me put it as clearly as I can, adapting her own words: she has been assaulted, it’s an act of terrorism. One of the most frightening things for her and most people in her life is that the people creating the assault are among us. Our nation is divided as clearly as it was in Civil War times.

Those terror-provoking persons have made it clear that there is no offense to fact in what Professor Cox said. Their cowardly actions testify to the truth of her words. The people creating the assault are among us.

One Response to “Olga Perez Stable Cox: A Divided Nation”

  1. Professor Cox, the behavior of these individuals is all the proof you need that what you said is absolutely true. They are using terroristic threats to try to silence you. Don’t let these ignorant people intimidate you.
You are absolutely correct. As a white person i am offended that these morons use the banner of white “supremacy” and Christian values in the same breath. Well done professor
